Assignment 5: A summary of Vee Speers
STYLE: Vee Speers' style is very unique. She doesn't just capture an image- she expresses a message behind her photographs. She quite clearly illustrates how she 'doesn't like to follow the crowd'. Her images are both disturbing and beautiful, and focuses on the contrast between fantasy and reality.
TECHNIQUE: The common technique that is used by Vee Speers is the position of the models. She locates her models in the centre of the frame, in front of a dull white background. The models also, especially in Thirteen and The birthday party, dress her female models in typical children's dresses
NARRATIVE:
The narrative behind Vee Speers' images is always very detailed. One example of the narrative of her images is ' the birthday party'. She expresses the triggers concerning todays paranoid society, and shows a great depth of emotion behind these issues. When Vee Speers uses the male models, she portrays the exploitation of child soldiers in this day and age.
CONTEXT: Vee Speers uses brightness and her focus point very well. She uses dull, although sharp lighting to contrast her centre subjects against it.

Vee Speers-analysing images
This is taken from Vee Speers' 'Thirteen'. For me the message of this image seems to reflect a dark and ominious mood, and forces me as a viewer to be curious as to what the image entails. The two crows represent doom or death and are used well in the photograph to portray this meaning. On the other hand, the white colour scheme in the image symbolizes cleanliness and perfection. Both the black and white together seem to come across as dull and simple, although the image is detailed in it's own way. The girl is also a pale shade so blends in well, with slight contrast too. The lighting is soft and, although the background is plain and white, the overall tone of the image is darkly lit. This gives the impression of something mysterious in the photograph. The image is taken from eye level which does not suggest that the subjects in the image are of more or less importance from a viewpoint.
comparison between Perou and Vee Speers
Perou and Vee Speers are both very talented and technical photographer's, always drawing audiences in with their unique styles.
Perou
His style: I think that perou mainly captures portraits as this is his strong area. He uses celebrities in many of his photographs to portray individual messages, and this also draws in an audience if celebrities are promoting or representing what's in the image. Perou also carries out long running collaboration's such as his work with Marilyn Manson. His photography skills aren't basic as he covers many different image ranges, rather than just focusing on one particular group of creations. Perou's area of work consists of:

Vee speers
Vee Speers is 51 and an Australian photographer that lives in Paris. She has featured in images magazine, The Brtish journal of photography and the Sunday times(UK). She is probably most known for her work in ' The birthday party' and 'Parisians'. Unlike Perou, Vee Speers shows focus and interest in expressing a detailed message behind her images. For example ' The birthday party' shows a modern society of how children are growing and trying to mature before their age. Although Perou, in different ways to Vee Speers, shows great skills, we can tell that Vee Speers is all about showing depth of creativity in the art of her photographs. I am personally very interested in Vee Speers' line of photography because many of the pictures mesmerize me. Especially with the birthday party and 'Thirteen', the images are carefully displayed and show the focal point clearly- this is because it's the same neutral backdrop, and the child is the main subject of the photo. It draws me in as the child seems mystifying and shows timeless elegance. Vee Speers freezes her model's postures, slightly making them look like lost guests at a fancy dress party, or like ghosts. The costumes are contrasted with various elements that make you feel curious, sometimes happy and other times sad. And because of all these series' of shots are taken at eye level, this makes the viewer be engaged emotionally. The military props in some of the photographs refer to cold hard reality of how child soldiers exist around the world. These images are captured using toy props modelled by young boys. The girls are captured just as impressively- they stand there like stiff wax figures, yet there is still something deeply disturbing about them. I personally think that Vee Speers reflects the mood's of her images perfectly.

Perou- analysing images- NOT FINISHED
FACTUAL
This photograph was taken by perou. Reports, reviews and interviews of his work show and suggest that he takes innovative photo's. This image partly shows how Perou includes innovation as Karen Gillan- the woman in the photograph- has just recently shaved her hair, so the viewers are aware that this image has not been present for long. The illustration is also in the 'new' section on Perou's website.

Some original photos...
These are some images that I attempted to recreate from Perou's work:
These photo's are good but they defintley need room for impovement. The objects in most of the pictures are wonky or in the wrong position and if I had thought about where the props need to be according to the model's face then they would have looked effective. I like the one just above as it displays its main aim, to be able to see the model's face and have her face central, with the plate and cup aligned to her face.

assigment 3: LIGHTING
Lighting
Lighting is the arrangment or effect of how the light looks in a photograph. This image shows a fair, pale backgound. There is a dark contour around the girl, who is the focal point. Although her skin is a pale colour, it gives off the effect that it has been sketched. . The girl's hair is quite weird and eccentric and also looks like it has been drawn rather than an image that has been naturally taken. I think this because the bun- part of her hair appears grainy. Her hair is reall neat and is a nice shape. It is actually the same size and shape as the balloon which makes the image look tidy and compact. The dress that the girl is wearing is a dark pinky colour, although it is not too vibrant and does not dominate the photograph. Even the balloon that the girl is blowing up isn't an intense colour, its clear. However you can see that there is a faint dark outline around the balloon. In some area's of the image, there are slight patchy parts- for example the bottom of the girls dress displays some lighter regions. This is where the surrounding light is exposed. This is a website I found useful with my assigment 3 on lighting: http://www.i-to-i.com/photography-get-the-lighting-right
This website is really helpful as it presents great recommendations and
guidance on how to improve taking a photo using light. It explains techniques on
how to take advantage of natural lighting and the use of backlighting, using the flash and using a tripod.
I found this website handy and really informative on the elements of lighting in photography.

assignment 3:DEPTH OF FIELD
Depth of field
Depth of field is a term in an image that refers to the range of distance between the nearest and furthest objects in a scene that appear sharp. One object is usually in complete focus and is sharp, whereas the background or another object that appears in the same photo is blurry and out of focus. This image, one of annie leibovitz's, resembles the teaching of depth of field. The man in red velvet is the main focal point as he is positioned to be more sitting forward than anything/ anyone else in the image. The girl and other man behind him are also part of the overall picture. As you can see, what surrounds the three characters are trees and spinning teacups. because the man at the front is wearing a dark ish suit and tall hat, he is instantly the centre subject. You can tell that the three people are spinning because the pink teacup in the background is tilting down, and also the trees in the background are twisting, as if in live motion.

assignment 3:COMPOSITION
Composition

This image is good evidence of composition because the arrangement of the elements have been considered carefully. The contrast taking place in the image is strong, and by using dramatic lighting on the man on the right, you are able to see sharp lighting The colours are, although different shades, very similiar and have been portrayed differently, depending on the lighting. The lightest shade, where the light has been focused on the most is deliberate. The photographer wants you to look here first. The photograph has not been sectioned into thirds, as all three sections are individual and unique. This website is really good and helpful because it offers tips on how to use composition in order to improve photos:
http://www.photoshoptutorials.ws/other-tutorials/photography-tutorials/10-important-tips-improve-composition-photos/
I think this website is very useful and informative. It gives good advice and I think that even if you
didn't know one thing about taking pictures, you would soon pick it up. The website is also very simple to follow and gives good illustrations of good photos and bad ones.
Another useful website that helped me understand the rule of thirds: http://www.thewritingnut.com/a-z/rule-thirds/
assigment 3: FOCAL POINT
Focal point

This photograph is also a demonstration of focal point. The features of this image makes it rather plain, however it is very skillful and contains some good ingriedients of composition.
It gives off an intriguing ora. The focal point of the portrait is the mans face. The glasses, veiled under the black hat, are good examples of colour contrast. You can see the outline of the frame of his glasses very clearly. The colour of the mans face is actually a slightly different shade to his neck. It is a grey ish colour, and this also makes every feature of the man stand out, so you can clearly see the shape of everything included in the photo. There is no background of the picture at all, so the viewers are completely fixated on the chosen focal point- the man.
This is a website that I found very helpful: http://www.picturecorrect.com/tips/focal-point-in-photo-compositions/
It teaches you about rule of thirds, exposure, light source and many other factors of focal point. Its a really good guideline and offers simple reccomendations to become a good photographer.

First analysis
Annie leibovitz- Lady gaga
Annie leibovitz is 63 and was born in the USA. She is a famous photographer and her career spans over 30 years. She has also written many books.
I have chosen this image of Annie's because it really interests me. Annie has expressed simplicity but cleverly displayed the focal point- Lady gaga- of the image well. The background of the photograph is a bleak grey, however it is uncomplicated and therefore is able to show the person in the picture very easily. The portrait is very natural and by not using objects such as brightly coloured hats in the photo, the photographer is able to capture the focal point appropriately. Lady gaga is positioned in the centre of the photo- this shows that Annie has created a deliberate focal point. The throw that Lady gaga is wearing breaks up the colour a bit. The light pink fluffy throw is still remotely pale, but it does a good job of separating Lady gaga's skin complexion and the backdrop in the photo. What I like about the image is that it focuses on the pop star's face well. The photo does not rely on the use of a bright colour within the frame, so they can fully focus on Lady gaga's natural beauty. The photo was taken in recent years, which is why I am surprised at the colours and lighting that have been used to create this image. This is because, generally, paler colours were used more in the older days. I like the picture mainly because it is unique- the image is plain but elegant, and is not dominated by bold colours. personally I like this photo because its so complex- its indicates simplicity yet it is still fascinating
