original images- vee speers

Vee Speers-analysing images

This is taken from Vee Speers' 'Thirteen'. For me the message of this image seems to reflect a dark and ominious mood, and forces me as a viewer to be curious as to what the image entails. The two crows represent doom or death and are used well in the photograph to portray this meaning. On the other hand, the white colour scheme in the image symbolizes cleanliness and perfection. Both the black and white together seem to come across as dull and simple, although the image is detailed in it's own way. The girl is also a pale shade so blends in well, with slight contrast too. The lighting is soft and, although the background is plain and white, the overall tone of the image is darkly lit. This gives the impression of something mysterious in the photograph. The image is taken from eye level which does not suggest that the subjects in the image are of more or less importance from a viewpoint.

comparison between Perou and Vee Speers

Perou and Vee Speers are both very talented and technical photographer's, always drawing audiences in with their unique styles.
Perou
Perou is 43, born In Newick. He is a British fashion, portrait and music photographer who has appeared in make me a supermodel in the UK and US and dirty sexy things. He studied at the university of Westminster and in 1994, Perou met many famous photographers, and began his first line of work with magazine companies such as dazed and confused and skin two.
His style: I think that perou mainly captures portraits as this is his strong area. He uses celebrities in many of his photographs to portray individual messages, and this also draws in an audience if celebrities are promoting or representing what's in the image. Perou also carries out long running collaboration's such as his work with Marilyn Manson. His photography skills aren't basic as he covers many different image ranges, rather than just focusing on one particular group of creations. Perou's area of work consists of:
- 'portraits'
- 'music'
- 'commissions'
- 'fashion'
- 'Personal'
- 'Projects'
- 'The other side'

Vee speers
Vee Speers is 51 and an Australian photographer that lives in Paris. She has featured in images magazine, The Brtish journal of photography and the Sunday times(UK).  She is probably most known for her work in ' The birthday party' and 'Parisians'. Unlike Perou, Vee Speers shows focus and interest in expressing a detailed message behind her images. For example ' The birthday party' shows a modern society of  how children are growing and trying to mature before their age. Although Perou, in different ways to Vee Speers, shows great skills, we can tell that Vee Speers is all about showing depth of creativity in the art of her photographs. I am personally very interested in Vee Speers' line of photography because many of the pictures mesmerize me. Especially with the birthday party and 'Thirteen', the images are carefully displayed and show the focal point clearly- this is because it's the same neutral backdrop, and the child is the main subject of the photo. It draws me in as the child seems mystifying and shows timeless elegance. Vee Speers freezes her model's postures, slightly making them look like lost guests at a fancy dress party, or like ghosts. The costumes are contrasted with various elements that make you feel curious, sometimes happy and other times sad. And because of all these series' of shots are taken at eye level, this makes the viewer be engaged emotionally. The military props in some of the photographs refer to cold hard reality of how child soldiers exist around the world. These images are captured using toy props modelled by young boys. The girls are captured just as impressively- they stand there like stiff wax figures, yet there is still something deeply disturbing about them. I personally think that Vee Speers reflects the mood's of her images perfectly.
Vee Speers' area's of work:
- ' The birthday party'
- ' Thirteen'
- 'Parisians'
-  'Bordello'
- 'Immortal'

Perou- analysing images- NOT FINISHED

FACTUAL
This photograph was taken by perou. Reports, reviews and interviews of his work show and suggest that he takes innovative photo's. This image partly shows how Perou includes innovation as Karen Gillan- the woman in the photograph- has just recently shaved her hair, so the viewers are aware that this image has not been present for long. The illustration is also in the 'new' section on Perou's website.

TECHNICAL

AESTHETIC

CONTEXT

analysing images: Perou-

This image is really interesting- its showing very little background and concentrating on the womans face. Its showing how it magnifies the face and exaggerates her facial expression in detail, emphasising the model's emotional state. The fact that the woman is the main subject of the photograph and is very close up suggests that Perou wants the viewer to be drawn into the womans personal space and share her feelings. This close up conveys more power than if the lady was further away into the background. Overall the sizing of the shot is intimate, and the angle is central which indicates that the lady is on the same level as us..perou has decided not to take the image from a high angle as he intentionally wants the lady to be the only significant object in the photo. The image is a fairly neutral shot as you can see it's based on eye level. Although the photo is in black and white, the lighting is varied and a slightly different shade- this makes the image come together well. The shiny glow around the woman breaks up the image a little bit, as her dark hair contrasts well and is separated against this bright white glare. The surrounding is a light grey-ish colour, which then again contrasts well against the dark hair and the white glowed area.

Some original photos...

These are some images that I attempted to recreate from Perou's work:

These photo's are good but they defintley need room for impovement. The objects in most of the pictures are wonky or in the wrong position and if I had thought about where the props need to be according to the model's face then they would have looked effective. I like the one just above as it displays its main aim, to be able to see the model's face and have her face central, with the plate and cup aligned to her face.

I like Perou's images because there is a wide variety of the kind he takes. There isn't a particular theme around each of Perou's photos which is really good because it indicates that he is a very talented photographer in taking photo's with lots of different messages and themes.
